FunFax & Penpals

What do I have for you today well, it's reminiscing about the past in a way.

I'm not sure if my American blogger friends have heard of a thing called FunFax? If you clicked on the link, you will see a picture of what it looked like, it was a 90s thing and all the craze! Anyway, it was an organiser for kids, really popular when I was young and you could buy all sorts of books to go in it. It was eductional too, it taught you about money, maths, English and different places! You could also get puzzles, spy things and books on how to make stuff.

Why am I blogging about this, apart from BECAUSE IT WAS COOL, because I remember through one of the books I got a penpal, well 2 actually. I can't actually remember their names but I still have their letter back home in at my parents. All I remember is one of the penpals used to send me loads of pics of her horse riding and she used to circle her 'i's (I remember that because I started doing that too, I've stopped now).

I have recently been looking for a penpal again as I think the excitement of receiving mail, except bills and other important stuff, has gone. I remember getting mail and I'd just want to rip it open and see what the other person had been up to, how different their life was from mine and what their likes and dislikes were. I'd love to send some illustrations along with a letter or postcard to someone who will respond in the same way. Today I emailed Lost Letters about joining up so hopefully I can get mailing something creative soon.

Did you have a penpal and would you in the future? Is it cool these days?

  1. I still keep in touch w/ my penpal Cheryl via Facebook, but we started writing to each other in 1979; she lives in England. In the 80s I belonged to the International Penfriend Club and wrote to people all over the world. Sadly it all dropped by the wayside as people married, had children and then email replaced handwritten letters. I lost touch w/ all of them over the years, except cheryl.

  2. Wow that's amazing especially after such a long time! I wish I had still kept in touch with my penpals from back in the day.

  3. A pen pal would be fun, it would be cool to share old fashioned letters.

  4. Pen-palling was definitely lots of fun, back in the day. Now, as an old hag, I dunno if I have the patience to write proper letters (I certainly don't feel like I've the time). Alas.

Hey, I've nominated you for 1 - 3 awards! (You're eligible for all, but since they require some work on your part, I thought I'd let you pick the award of your choice.) Click here to go to my blog and claim it/them!

  5. I never had a penpal :( I always looked through magazines and thought about it, but I was pretty young so I don't think much of it would have made sense hah. But you're totally right there's nothing as fun as getting real mail through the post that isn't bills!

    1. Oh no, i probably was a bit young too, i never knew what to write and would spend days writing on an a5 sheet, that's single sided and i had big writing. Well, i'm thinking more of sending artwork, like prints or doodles or something once a month so if you're up for it, let me know. Oh, how did your degree show go? It brought back memories of when I had mine and what's the plans next?

  6. FunFax!! god I'd forgotten all about that! I used to love my funfax - it was amazing!! I hope my mum still has it, I'm going to look for it when I go back in the summer! I used to have lots of penpals too - usually I met them on holidays and then wrote to them when I got back home. If you really do want a penpal again, and don't mind posting to Spain, I think it would be fun and I love the idea of sending art and doodles and bits and pieces like that too, email me if you want? thepinkrachael@hotmail.com
